Hi - my name is Dee Solomon and I am the School Psychologist here at Seward Elementary. As a school psychologist, my goal is to help students succeed academically, socially and emotionally. I work with educators, parents and professionals to create a safe, healthy and supportive learning environment for all students and work to strengthen connections between home and school.
As a school psychologist one of my responsibilities is to assess academic skills and aptitude for learning and help design interventions for children at risk of failing at school. Research highlights the importance of reading and early literacy skills. One of the best predictors of reading difficulties is the inability to segment words and syllables into constituent sound units (phonemic awareness). Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in words. It is not phonics and does not involve words in print. I have included some direct links to websites which promote early literacy skills through fun activities or games. The Auburn School District is actively invested in the screening of the acquisition of early literacy skills and reading fluency throughout the school year.
